Poem: "How to Beat the Cold"

HOW TO BEAT THE COLD

Actually, it can’t be beaten.
It can only be accepted.
You should leave small openings
in your house
so the cold can creep in
like a cat
and share the comfort
of your warm carpet.
You should allow it
to come in
through the lining of your coat
where it can live at ease
beside your cozy skin.
And your heart is warm,
so let it, too,
comfort the bitter cold
that perhaps has no friend
except you.
