Everything was standing by.
His heart was stable
at 60 beats per minute,
his ten fingers twisted and turned
just as he wished,
his eyes swiveled
with ease and elegance,
the desk where he was sitting
was prepared to be a perfect desk,
his school, he knew,
was waiting
where he and his students
had left it yesterday,
and the darkness outside
was rising like a curtain.
